<p>NMI is looking for a passionate Intermediate Software Engineer to join our Merchant Central Scrum team. Merchant Central is a key application within NMI’s Merchant Relationship Management (MRM) ecosystem, supporting merchant onboarding, underwriting, configuration, reporting, and ongoing support. As part of a cross-functional Scrum team, you will help evolve this platform to meet the needs of our partners and internal stakeholders.<br><br>This role is ideal for someone who can navigate complex systems, enjoys solving interesting engineering challenges, and thrives in a collaborative agile environment.In this role, you’ll contribute to the full software development lifecycle - from planning and design through implementation, code review, testing, and deployment. You’ll work within a Scrum team and collaborate closely with Product, QA, and fellow engineers to deliver high-quality, secure software that powers our core merchant-management features. </p><p><strong>Key Duties</strong></p><ul><li>Design, build, and enhance features within Merchant Central using PHP/Laravel and React</li><li>Develop efficient database queries and optimize MySQL performance as needed</li><li>Write unit, integration, and end-to-end tests to ensure code quality and reliability</li><li>Document critical business logic, application workflows, and key architectural decisions</li><li>Collaborate with Product Managers to refine requirements and contribute to technical solution design</li><li>Participate in code reviews to maintain high engineering standards and share best practices</li><li>Work with SRE and QA teams to ensure software is observable, resilient, secure, and production-ready</li><li>Diagnose and resolve incidents, defects, and performance bottlenecks in collaboration with cross-functional teams</li><li>Contribute to continuous improvement of development processes, tooling, and engineering practices <h3><strong>Skills & Experience</strong></h3><p><strong>Required</strong></p><ul><li>Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience</li><li>3+ years of experience developing complex applications</li><li>Fluency in PHP and modern development practices</li><li>Strong understanding of object-oriented programming and design patterns</li><li>Experience with relational databases such as MySQL (schema design, query optimization)</li><li>Familiarity with secure coding principles</li><li>Experience with Git and CI/CD workflows</li><li>Experience contributing across the full SDLC</li><li>Experience with modern frontend development (JavaScript/TypeScript, React,NPM, basic CSS/SCSS)</li><li>Ability to work both independently and collaboratively</li></ul><p><strong>Preferred</strong></p><ul><li>Strong experience with Laravel or similar modern PHP frameworks</li><li>Experience with containerization technologies (Docker, Kubernetes)</li><li>Experience with caching technologies (Redis, Memcached)</li><li>Familiarity with GraphQL</li><li>Experience working with logging & monitoring systems (e.g., <a href="http://logz.io/">Logz.io</a>)</li><li>Understanding of cloud-native or SaaS architectures (scalability, resilience, multitenancy)</li><li>Experience using agentic AI tooling (e.g., autonomous coding agents, Claude Code)</li></ul></li></ul><p><strong>As well as being a part of something exciting everyday, you will also receive the following benefits:</strong></p><ul><li>Annual salary + bonus</li><li>A remote first culture!</li><li>Flex PTO </li><li>Health, Dental and Vision Insurance</li><li>13 Paid Holidays</li><li>Company volunteer days</li></ul><p><strong>What we do!</strong></p><p>NMI enables our partners with choice, and challenges the one-size-fits-all approach to payments.
